From 1986 to 1999, Simon Hulse enjoyed a life of academia as a lecturer in Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth. In his spare time, he developed software to improve business processes, information availability, collaboration and communication in his department. He started thinking that perhaps this could form the basis for a company outside the university. When he was approached by several local companies who wanted him to write similar software for them, he decided on a change of lifestyle and founded SmartData in late 1999.

The company has grown rapidly and acquired an impressive list of clients in both the private and public sectors. Applications have ranged from small business databases to entire workflow management systems, intranet applications, and content-managed websites.

Our offices are based in Technium Aberystwyth, a high-tech incubator facility provided by the Welsh Assembly Government.
